Fish, worms, crawdads, liver, and reeking confections of blood and guts and brains and cheese are the blue-plate specials for Channel catfish. Here is my favorite stink bait recipe. This is not a catfish bait to try to make if you have a weak stomach. I am serious, this catfish bait really stinks. But if you like to catch lots of catfish, then maybe you should think about it.

Don't try to make this stuff unless it's hot outside. I live in Arizona and wait till at least May or June to start. You will have to adjust the time to your own location and climate.

Here is the list of ingredeints you will need for this catfish bait.

40 lbs hog or cow brains
40 lbs cheese (use 50 to 60 lbs for thicker bait)
1 gallon shad or other small baitfish

This makes a lot of bait and you could try cutting the amounts back next time if this makes to much for you.

Use what ever kind of cheese you can get your hands on. Cheddar, Colby, Jack have all been used in the making of this catfish bait. 40 lbs is the least amount of cheese I would use and it will be runny at that. 50 or 60 will make better bait for warmer weather.

Set the hog or cow brains out in the sun for 3 or 4 days. If you start with already soured brains, it will speed things up a bit. They will only need to set out for 2 or 3 days. You will need to have the cheese grated in some way. A meat grinder works well. Put everything in a large plastic barrel (trashcans with flat bottoms work the best) Make sure that the containers are at least three times the size of the amount of bait you put in.

This is very important as this stuff is going to swell up big time. Blend everything together (a paint stirrer on a drill motor works really well). Make sure you keep a lid on the barrel to keep out flies, the neighbors dogs and cats. Set the barrel in a real warm spot (away from neighbors, they will appreciate this) and stir the catfish bait every other day.

If the brains were real nasty before you started it will take about 2 weeks before the fermenting slows down. If maggots get started, no problem, just spray some fly spray on top each time after you give it a stir, they will die quickly. When the swelling between stirrings starts to slow, you can then dip the bait into quart jars ONLY HALF FULL. That is another important thing because it will continue to swell up in the jars. I learned this the hard way. You will know what I mean if you have a full jar of stink bait explode in your fishin truck. You will have every dog and cat for miles around coming to visit.

Use a piece of sponge, the smaller the better (I use the seasponge, I have found this to work the best) with a #8 treble hook to dip in the catfish bait being sure to wring any water out of sponge before redipping or the bait will become runny. There are also many plastic worms made for this that work very well also. The catfish bait will stay in the sponge or the worms pretty good but rebait about every 20 mins.

You can add cattail fuzz till it becomes the consistency of peanut butter and use it for a catfish punch bait. Take a small bare treble hook (#8 works real good) and push it into the catfish punch bait. A wad stays on the hook for a long time.

Never caught anything but a channel catfish on it.

You can go to a meat market and they can order the brains for you. The cheese is a little harder. If you can find a wholesale cheese distribution company they will sell you moldy or out of date cheese for a few cents on the pound. If you have to pay full price for brains and cheese you're talking a good amount of money.

Good luck and happy catfishin!!
